About The Position

Belmont University is seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Music Theory/Applied Winds at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 1, 2027. The primary responsibilities include teaching music theory/aural skills courses, and undergraduate and graduate classical winds (tuba/euphonium strongly preferred). Other potential teaching areas include performance and style, pedagogy, and instrumental methods, depending on the candidate's background and expertise. The annual teaching load is 24 hours, comprising 12 hours of music theory coursework and 12 hours of applied lessons and other academic courses. Additional duties include academic advising, maintaining scholarly/creative endeavors, student recruitment, and participating in department, college, and university service. The ideal candidate will be an engaging teacher-artist with expertise in current pedagogical principles, performance practice, and best practices in the field. The university also seeks individuals who are comfortable working in a Christ-centered environment and a collegial atmosphere. Belmont University is particularly interested in applicants who can demonstrate the ability and interest to collaborate on course design and teach interdisciplinary and topical courses within their innovative general education program.

Requirements

• Doctoral degree in applied music or music theory
• Knowledge of principles, methods and current developments in the field of study
• Knowledge of subject matter and course content taught
• Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques
• Demonstrated capacity to engage in high quality scholarly activity
• Demonstrated ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate and evaluate students
• Skilled in the use of computers, Internet resources, and MS Office software
• Ability to learn relevant sections of BannerWeb, Belmont University’s online integrated database system for student grading
• Ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process
• Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Knowledge of the programs and services offered by Belmont University
• Interest and ability to work collaboratively in course design and to teach interdisciplinary and topical courses
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies
• Completion of a background check satisfactory to the University

Nice To Haves

• Previous teaching at the collegiate level is preferred
