About The Position

The Legal Rhetoric Program in the Washington College of Law at American University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Legal Rhetoric, without reappointment, beginning August 1, 2026 and ending July 31, 2027. This position involves teaching two sections of Legal Research & Writing I in the Fall and two sections of Legal Research & Writing II in the Spring. These courses are designed for first-year students and meet once weekly for 110 minutes with class sizes of approximately 22 students. The curriculum introduces students to legal research, writing, analysis, citation, and both written and oral advocacy. The learning environment is highly interactive, incorporating simulated client interviews, mock oral arguments, and facilitated group work. Full-time faculty collaborate on developing a shared syllabus, assignments, and assessment rubrics. The role also includes supervising and mentoring classroom teaching assistants.

Requirements

  • J.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree by the date of application
