Assistant Professor - Law and Technology
About The Position
The Department of Justice Studies at San José State University is seeking an assistant professor of law and technology to begin in August 2027. This role will focus on developing curriculum that critically examines the intersection of law, technology, and inequality, including issues like algorithmic bias, digital evidence, and disparities in access to legal resources. The department is multi-disciplinary, offering undergraduate and graduate programs, and includes specialized concentrations and projects in areas such as digital evidence, cybersecurity, and legal aid. Requirements
- A PhD in legal studies, criminology, justice studies, cyber security, digital forensics or related social science field (e.g. sociology, economics, psychology, public policy); PhD candidates who expect to have a degree conferred by August 2027 are encouraged to apply.
- Strong evidence of, or potential for, excellence in research.
- Strong evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching.
- Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Nice To Haves
- Substantive specialization area in one or more of the following areas: law & society, Black/Latinx experience and/or equity gaps, cybersecurity/digital forensics
- Potential for delivering Forensic Science-Digital Evidence curriculum
- Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals or academic press books
- Experience writing grant proposals
- Experience teaching at undergraduate or graduate levels
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the department's mission in research, teaching, and service.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Participate in curriculum development, program planning, and academic advising.
- Conduct research and publish scholarship in specialty area(s).
- Seek external funding to support scholarly research.
- Engage in service at the department, college, and university levels, including community and professional service.
- Participate in shared governance through committees and other service assignments.
- Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
