About The Position

The Barnard College English Department seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in post-1945 American literature, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. Barnard is a liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City affiliated with Columbia University. The department is particularly interested in applicants whose work explores the interplay of literature and postmodernity amid transnational migrations of people and texts, and disputed narratives of sovereignty, civil rights, the Cold War, and the post-9/11 world. The position carries a four-course teaching load (2+2), including the existing survey course in post-1945 American literature and a lecture course developed in the Assistant Professor’s area of expertise. The faculty member will also participate in core departmental and college offerings, which may include Critical Writing and First-Year Seminar. Department members are expected to mentor pre-major and major advisees. The successful candidate will have a robust research agenda and demonstrate commitment to the life of a department. A Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment. Applications must be submitted through Workday and include a curriculum vitae, cover letter, writing sample of no more than 25 double-spaced pages, an unannotated table of contents for the current monograph project, and a one-page statement about teaching and mentoring philosophy, experiences, and interests. Only semi-finalists will be asked to provide three references. Review is expected to begin around November 12, 2026, and may continue until the position is filled.
