The Department of English at Davidson College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Creative Nonfiction and the Literature of the Sciences. The position begins July 1, 2027. Candidates are expected to have an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Creative Writing by the appointment date and a strong publication record in creative nonfiction. Davidson College values undergraduate teaching and a sustained creative practice. The role involves teaching five courses annually (four in the first year), including Introductory and Advanced Creative Nonfiction, and two courses in the Literature of the Sciences, which explore scientific topics from a literary viewpoint based on the professor's expertise. Potential course topics include Nature Writing, Illness Narratives, Science and Scandal, Writing Biology, and The Literature of Scientific Discoveries. These courses may be cross-listed with programs like Biology, Environmental Studies, Public Health, and History, depending on the candidate's specialization. Experience or interest in teaching new-media nonfiction forms, such as podcasting, is also welcomed.
