About The Position

The Department of Economics at San José State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Economics to begin in August 2026. This position is particularly interested in candidates with research and teaching interests in Urban Economics, Regional Economics, and Spatial Data Analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, conducting research, engaging students in applied projects, supervising student research, and collaborating with colleagues across disciplines. A demonstrated ability, or strong potential, to secure external research funding is highly desirable. The Department of Economics, within the College of Social Sciences, serves approximately 340 undergraduate and 30 graduate students, with a diverse student body. The department offers BS and BA degrees in Economics (including an SJSU Online BA), a Minor in Economics, MA degrees in Economics and Applied Economics, and a 4+1 Accelerated Master Program. All BS and MA programs are STEM-designated. The department comprises 7 tenured faculty and 15 lecturer faculty with expertise in various economic fields, and hosts an Experimental Economics Lab. Requirements

• Ph.D. in Economics expected by the date of the appointment.
• Demonstrated record of effective teaching.
• Demonstration of research potential and an established agenda for future research.
• Awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Nice To Haves

• Research focuses in one or more of the following fields: Urban Economics, Regional Economics, and Spatial Economics.
• Experience in spatial data analysis (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and other computational tools.
• Commitment to student success and inclusive pedagogy.
• Record of teaching excellence and relevant teaching experience serving diverse student populations.
• Commitment to or experience in securing external funding.
• Ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate economics courses.

Responsibilities

• Teach and develop curriculum in areas of specialization as well as core economics courses.
• Advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students.
• Maintain an active research agenda and contribute to the advancement of the discipline through peer-reviewed scholarship and professional engagement.
• Participate in shared governance, including Department, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
• Comply with requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
• Complete Clery Act training and immediately report Clery incidents to the institution if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
• Complete assigned and required CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
