About The Position

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Sociology. The successful candidate will be an Assistant Professor of Criminology specializing in GIS and spatial analysis. This role supports the Criminology major and the broader Sociology curriculum through teaching, advising, scholarship, curriculum development, and service. Requirements

Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology or a closely related social science field from an accredited university. Doctoral degree must be completed by the start of the appointment.
Specialization in GIS, spatial analysis, or geospatial methods as applied to criminology, public safety, urban inequality, demography, or related social science questions.
Evidence of an active or developing scholarly agenda in criminology or a related field that uses GIS, spatial analysis, quantitative methods, mixed methods, or applied geospatial research.
University teaching experience as instructor of record and/or teaching assistant.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Must pass a background check.
Must comply with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

Evidence of ability to teach GIS, crime mapping, spatial data analysis, research methods, statistics, quantitative methods, crime analysis, demography, or other methods-intensive courses.
Evidence of ability to teach courses across the Department’s curriculum.
Evidence of teaching excellence through student evaluations, peer observations, examples of pedagogical innovation, or other evidence of a commitment to teaching.
Evidence of experience using specialized GIS or spatial analysis tools, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, R, Python, GeoDa, spatial SQL, or related software.
Evidence of an active scholarly agenda that can provide opportunities for undergraduate student research.
Evidence of ability to serve as an academic advisor and research mentor to a diverse undergraduate student body.
Experience with community-engaged, agency-based, public-sector, or policy-relevant research in criminology, justice, public safety, urban inequality, or related areas.
Evidence of curriculum and/or program development experience, especially applied methods, GIS, digital humanities, data science, or career-readiness curriculum.
Potential for interdisciplinary collaboration with programs such as Geography, Political Science, Economics, Urban and Regional Planning, or Architecture.

Responsibilities

Support the Criminology major and broader Sociology curriculum through teaching, advising, scholarship, curriculum development, and service.
Teach, advise, conduct scholarship, develop curriculum, and provide service to the department, university, profession, and community.
Contribute to high-demand courses in Criminology and Sociology.
Develop GIS-related curriculum.
Integrate applied geospatial modules into existing courses such as Crime Analysis, Research Methods, Statistics, Urban Sociology, Quantitative Analysis, and Introduction to Criminology.
Serve as an academic advisor and research mentor to a diverse undergraduate student body.
Engage in community-engaged, agency-based, public-sector, or policy-relevant research in criminology, justice, public safety, urban inequality, or related areas.
Participate in curriculum and/or program development, especially in applied methods, GIS, digital humanities, data science, or career-readiness curriculum.
Collaborate with programs such as Geography, Political Science, Economics, Urban and Regional Planning, or Architecture.
