About The Position

The Department of Psychology in the College of Public Affairs and Health Sciences at the University of North Texas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology to join our APA-accredited doctoral program. The specific area of research for this faculty position is open, although we are particularly interested in candidates whose work would strengthen the program’s Sport Psychology cluster. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a strong research program and a record of applying for or receiving extramural funding. Faculty responsibilities include developing and maintaining an active research program, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, seeking research grants, advising and mentoring doctoral students, and sharing service duties. Successful applicants are also expected to demonstrate strong interests in mentoring students’ professional development and supervising students’ clinical work since mentoring and supervision are valued components of program faculty. Requirements

• Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program or a closely related discipline.
• Eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in the State of Texas.
• Evidence of a strong and growing research agenda with potential for sustained external funding.
• Demonstrated record of scholarly publications.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, and training students.

• Record of applying for and/or receiving competitive extramural funding.
• Research program and expertise that complement one or more of the program’s three elective clusters, with particular interest in candidates who would strengthen the Sport Psychology cluster.
• Record of teaching/mentoring undergraduate or graduate students.
• For candidates with Sport Psychology expertise, certification or eligibility for certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).

Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain an externally funded research program in counseling psychology.
• Teach undergraduate and doctoral-level courses in counseling psychology and related areas.
• Mentor doctoral students in research, clinical training, and professional development.
• Supervise doctoral research, including master's theses and doctoral dissertations.
• Contribute to doctoral clinical training through practicum supervision and other training experiences consistent with the faculty member's expertise.
• Publish impactful research in leading peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
• Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to advance research that promotes psychological health, resilience, and well-being.
• Contribute to curriculum development, APA accreditation activities, departmental governance, and professional service.
• Applicants employing innovative methodologies —including community-engaged research, longitudinal studies, implementation science, digital mental health technologies, mixed-methods research, advanced quantitative methods, or intervention research—are especially encouraged to apply.
• We are particularly interested in candidates whose research would strengthen the program’s Sport Psychology cluster and whose professional expertise would contribute to the UNT Center for Sport Psychology and Athlete Mental Health. Relevant areas may include sport and performance psychology; athlete mental health, wellness, identity, and help-seeking; and related prevention or intervention work. Strong candidates whose research complements the program’s other elective clusters or existing program strengths will also be considered.
