About The Position

Dean College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Communication, a 10-month, annually renewable, interdisciplinary full-time faculty position. The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking for an accomplished educator with experience teaching our core required oral communication courses. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in the areas of interpersonal communication, group communication and/or public communication, but welcome candidates from a wide range of communication backgrounds. We seek an accomplished educator with experience teaching communication theory and practice. This faculty member's primary role will be to teach the required core/general ed courses, Communication Fundamentals (SPC 101) and Applied Professional Communication (COM 327) and to serve as a resource for the oral communication program. In addition, this faculty member will have a secondary affiliation with another academic program based on their academic and professional experience and will teach courses in this area as well. This faculty member will collaborate with the oral communication program coordinator and other faculty in the program and at the College to provide students with the needed background, knowledge and rich experiences that prepares them for work in various industry settings or in graduate school. This educator should be well versed in creating a classroom environment based on experiential learning and active engagement. This is an in-person position. Applications will be considered until the position is filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants received by December 1, 2026. Expected salary range: $69,000-$72,000 when annualized, commensurate with experience. Requirements

  • PhD in Communication, or a closely related field/discipline is required
  • Candidates with an ABD will be considered
  • Undergraduate teaching experience is required, particularly with first-year undergraduates
  • Commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong computer skills, the use of technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy, the ability to access the College's online resources, and a willingness to be responsive to students via digital tools, including our digital learning management system
  • The successful candidate will possess expertise in learner-centered teaching and will have the ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles and at varying stages of academic readiness

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with online teaching, course management systems, digital technology, and classroom media such as smart boards is desired

Responsibilities

  • Teach a 5:5 teaching load (teach 15 contact hours per semester)
  • Develop curriculum grounded in best practices and assess the results of program initiatives
  • Hold office hours as required and meet with students by appointment
  • Participate in committees as assigned, attend school and program meetings
  • Participate in recruitment activities and student orientations
  • Other duties as assigned
