About The Position

The Assistant Professor of Clinical - Surgery, Cardiac role reports directly to the Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. This position is responsible for the overall functions of the division and clinical activities at University of Miami Hospital and affiliated institutions. The physician will provide patient care, educate patients on wellness, prevention, and early detection, and contribute to the mission of the Department, UMSM, UMMG, and affiliated Hospitals. Key objectives include establishing the division as a local and national leader, acquiring necessary resources, and managing the division's operational budget. The role involves promoting UHealth's mission in medical education, research, and quality patient care, ensuring high-quality clinical services, and participating in health care industry activities. The position also includes faculty supervision, resident and student education, and pursuing funding for experiments.

Requirements

Excellent academic record.
Recognized leader in heart transplantation and cardiac surgery.
Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to build programs and align constituencies.
Recognized teaching skills and expertise in residency, fellowship, and medical student training.
Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Proper bedside manner.
Tactful and professional demeanor.
MD or MD/PhD degree.
Board certification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Florida Medical License.
DEA certificate.
At least 0-2 years of experience post Fellowship.

Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and set forth clinical, financial, educational, and research divisional objectives.
Establish the division as a leader on a local and national level.
Acquire medical, financial, and research resources to achieve divisional objectives.
Develop and regulate the Division's operational budget with the Department Chair.
Propose and gain acceptance of short-term objectives that complement the strategic plan and ensure the viability of the Division.
Promote the mission of UHealth in providing medical education, research, and quality patient care.
Ensure that the clinical services offered by the Division are of the highest quality and meet community needs.
Participate in activities within the health care industry that impact the future role of the Divisional Surgical Areas funding environment.
Serve in key activities for the Department of Surgery as agreed upon with the Division Chief.
Participate in establishing education and training policies.
Direct and assist faculty in academic progress.
Assure adequate clinical experience for resident, fellow, and student education.
Provide clinical care in all aspects of cardiac surgery, including pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, cardiothoracic trauma, and electrophysiologic abnormalities.
Collaborate with Heart and Lung Transplantation Teams.
Build private clinics at University of Miami Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospitals.
Participate in clinical care at University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Miami Veteran’s Administration Hospital.
Become an integral part of the minimally invasive cardiac valves programs and the aortic surgery center.
Supervise residents at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center and the Miami Veteran’s Administration Hospital.
Teach students in junior and senior elective programs.
Pursue protocols to fund experiments under supervision.
Document all services in patient medical records.
Comply with Departmental Policy & Procedures & Hospital Bylaws.
Exercise final medical judgment in all issues of healthcare.
Order studies, tests, and ancillary services.
Apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
Apply knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Maintain proper telephone etiquette.
Perform in a tactful and professional manner.
