About The Position

Wesleyan University's Department of Art and Art History invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art History beginning July 1, 2027. We seek an historian of pre-modern Islamic Art, working on periods before 1800. We welcome specialists in any subfield or geographic region, pursuing any methodological approach/es; special consideration will be given to scholars of South, Central, and/or West Asian art. Candidates from the fields of art and architectural history and archaeology are welcome to apply. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college; the teaching load is 2/2 on campus. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying out a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. It is expected that candidates will maintain a robust scholarly practice, as a strong publishing record will be expected for promotion.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Art History or a related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor
  • If the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, they must complete the Ph.D. in Art History or a related field within one year of hire to be hired as an Instructor.
  • Specialists in pre-modern Islamic Art, working on periods before 1800
  • Scholars of South, Central, and/or West Asian art will receive special consideration
  • Candidates from the fields of art and architectural history and archaeology are welcome to apply.
