About The Position

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Mathematics beginning September 1, 2027. The research area of interest is in applied mathematics with a preferred emphasis in scientific and mathematical Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Statistics, and related areas at the intersection of mathematics, statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science. We are especially interested in candidates whose research combines rigorous mathematical and computational methodologies with impactful applications, preferably in biotechnology, biomedicine, neuroscience, or related scientific domains. Exceptional candidates from other areas of applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. The Mathematics Department at UMass Boston is a vibrant and collegial group of faculty with research interests spanning the spectrum of pure and applied mathematics including Geometry and Symplectic Topology; Representation Theory; and Applied Mathematics, Data Science, and Mathematical Biology, and it pursues an important teaching mission. The College of Science and Mathematics is committed to inclusive excellence in research and education. We are a highly collaborative college of STEM including departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, and strong interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs. State-of-the-art research computing facilities, including high-performance computing clusters, are available to UMass Boston researchers. Partnerships and collaborations with academic institutions and industry research laboratories in the Greater Boston area offer substantial opportunities for collaboration. The successful candidate must possess a PhD degree in mathematics, statistics or related fields and must have a robust research program and strong potential to secure extramural funding. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to expand and strengthen the research within the department and college. All candidates must exhibit a clear commitment to advancing the university's teaching mission through their participation in on-going student success initiatives in the department and the university. The successful candidate will also have the capacity to contribute to broad departmental and college service. A teaching load reduction to root a strong research program will be provided. For more information about the department see https://www.umb.edu/science-mathematics/academic-departments/mathematics/. UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who engage the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.
