About The Position

The Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at East Tennessee State University seeks a 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor of Math Education position beginning August 2027. This role involves teaching in-person, online, and/or hybrid courses on the main campus in Johnson City and at the ETSU-Sevierville campus within teacher educator programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate mathematics methods courses in the elementary education program, which has experienced significant enrollment growth. At the graduate level, the applicant may teach in Master of Arts in Teaching and/or Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction programs. In addition to teaching, candidates are expected to engage in research and scholarly activities and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession. The typical annual workload is allocated as 60% teaching, 20% research, and 20% service. The role may also include supervising teacher candidates in the field.

Requirements

Earned terminal degree (EdD or PhD) in Mathematics Education, Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or similar field with a concentration in math or STEM; ABD will be considered with degree awarded by August 13, 2027.
Minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics or mathematics education courses.

Experience teaching mathematics in grades K-8, especially K-5, in a U.S. school setting.
Experience supervising and/or mentoring pre-service student teacher candidates, especially in K-5 field placements.
Experience teaching face-to-face and online education courses, especially in mathematics education, at the university level.
Experience developing online education courses, especially mathematics education courses, at the university level.
Demonstrated potential to secure external research funding.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate mathematics methods courses in the elementary education program.

Engage in research and scholarly activities.
Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession.
Supervise teacher candidates in the field.

Advance a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda appropriate to the mathematics education discipline.
Work with diverse populations and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff.
