About The Position

The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Law and Society/Sociology of Law. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga is part of a tri-campus University of Toronto sociology community with strengths across law and society, inequality, race and ethnicity, migration, gender and sexuality, work and organizations, political sociology, health, disability, family, culture, and quantitative and qualitative methods. Requirements

• Earned a PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter.
• Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in Law and Society / Sociology of Law.
• Research advances sociological understandings of law across the breadth of sociolegal scholarship.
• Employ a wide range of theoretical, comparative, historical, and/or transnational approaches whose work complements and enhances existing departmental strengths.
• Demonstrate expertise in quantitative methods and/or mixed methods research.
• Ability to teach undergraduate quantitative methods and/or research methods.
• Evidence of research excellence, demonstrated through a record of publications/forthcoming publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals that meet high international standards; the submitted research statement; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees.
• Evidence of excellence in teaching, demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, including sample course materials and teaching evaluations or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities, and strong letters of reference.
• Submit a statement describing their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as: teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities; efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

Responsibilities

• Pursue innovative and independent research and establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
• Teach in the undergraduate program at the University of Toronto Mississauga and contribute to the Department's Criminology, Law & Society program.
• Contribute to undergraduate instruction in quantitative and/or mixed methods and strengthen sociology-wide research and teaching in Law and Society.
• Be a member of the Graduate Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto and teach and supervise students in the tri-campus graduate program.
• Be assigned a teaching and service load.
