About The Position

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor without tenure to focus on Sustainable Wood Utilization. This full-time, twelve-month position is for a three-year term, renewable based on funding, starting in April 2027. The role involves research, teaching, and service within a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join the Center for International Trade in Forest Products (CINTRAFOR) and is expected to secure external funding for their research. The position will be primarily supported by extramural funding, with partial salary support from CINTRAFOR's state funds for the first 24 months. Depending on SEFS needs, the candidate may also teach up to two courses per year. The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences is dedicated to advancing knowledge for the stewardship of natural and managed environments and the sustainable use of their resources, serving approximately 700 undergraduates and 110 graduate students.

Requirements

• A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in a relevant field, including but not limited to forestry, environmental science/engineering, forest economics, and forest business.
• Demonstrated focus on wood products and wood utilization (including bioenergy), evidenced by peer-reviewed publications addressing fundamental and/or applied research at the PhD and/or postdoctoral level.
• Two years postdoctoral research experience in an academic or non-academic setting is required.

Responsibilities

• Engage in research assessing the impacts of wood utilization on regional forest product industries, climate change mitigation efforts, and sustainable resource management practices.
• Manage a diverse portfolio of research projects.
• Engage in outreach activities with various stakeholders across the regional forestry sector, including forest-dependent communities, the forest products industry, governmental/non-governmental organizations, and policymakers.
• Secure external funding for their research program and annual salary.
• Develop strong relationships with organizations that fund research in sustainable bio-based products, including engineered wood products and bioenergy products.
• Establish and/or maintain an active agenda of scholarly pursuits, including externally supported research and creative and/or professionally-associated practice.
• Teach departmental and interdepartmental courses, with the potential to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Engage in teaching, research, and service as expected of all University of Washington faculty.
