About The Position

The School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking a full-time, professional-track faculty member at the rank of assistant professor in sports journalism and media. This position, starting in Fall 2027, is within the top-ranked Moody College of Communication. The School offers B.J., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees and is located in the G.B. Dealey Center for New Media. We are looking for an experienced media professional with expertise in reporting and storytelling across digital platforms, including proficiency in social media, social video, audio, and data techniques for audience building. The role involves teaching undergraduate courses in sports journalism, mentoring students, curriculum development, and fostering industry relationships. Opportunities may exist to engage with sports-related initiatives like the Moody College sports production minor, the Center for Sports Communication & Media, and the summer high school sports journalism camp.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field.
  • At least five years of professional sports media experience at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reporting and storytelling across digital platforms.
  • Strong understanding of how to use social media, social video, audio, data, and other techniques to build an audience across multiple platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in sports journalism and related areas, such as sports reporting, multimedia storytelling, social media strategy, sports video production, live and event coverage, and audience development.
  • Mentor students pursuing careers in sports media.
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Strengthen relationships with industry partners.
  • Participate in sports-related initiatives, depending on qualifications, such as the Moody College sports production minor, the Center for Sports Communication & Media, and the School’s summer high school sports journalism camp.
