Loyola Marymount University's Communication Studies Department seeks a tenure-line Assistant Professor in Media Studies. The department is one of LMU’s largest undergraduate programs and emphasizes ethical and effective communication in pursuit of a more just and humane world. The university seeks a teacher-scholar who values its mission and contributes to inclusive excellence, student success, belonging, and the Common Good. The successful candidate will teach introductory courses in communication theory, research, and media studies; upper-division courses in their area of expertise; the major’s senior research course; and courses for the Digital Media, Cultures, and Industries (DMCI) minor. The position also includes advising Communication Studies majors and DMCI minors, contributing to curriculum assessment and development, participating in departmental, college, and university service, and supporting the growth of media studies, digital media programming, and socially engaged media practice. Department tenure-track faculty typically teach four-unit classes on a two-year 2-2-2-3 course rotation, with a contracted workload expectation of 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. Faculty are encouraged to contribute to the LMU Core Curriculum. The department values collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged teaching and research, and seeks candidates who will teach and mentor a diverse student body in Los Angeles through excellent undergraduate teaching, active scholarship, and innovative student engagement, including collaborative and community-based learning. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Media Studies, or a closely related field by August 2027. Candidates who have not yet completed the degree must provide evidence of a workable completion timeline before appointment. Applicants must demonstrate an ongoing research agenda, a commitment to inclusive, student-centered education, and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds. Preference is given to candidates whose research focuses on media industries or institutions, and to those able to support the department’s media studies curriculum, digital media programming, and socially engaged media practice. Media production skills are also desirable. The application deadline is December 1, 2026. The expected salary is $86,500. The position may not be eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
