Loyola Marymount University's Communication Studies Department seeks a tenure-line Assistant Professor in Media Studies. The department is one of LMU's largest undergraduate programs and emphasizes ethical and effective communication in pursuit of a more just and humane world. The successful candidate will contribute to LMU's teacher-scholar model through transformative undergraduate teaching, an active research and creative-work agenda, student mentoring, service, and work toward greater equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility. The position requires teaching introductory communication theory, research, and media studies; upper-division courses in the candidate's area of expertise; the major's senior research course; and courses for the Digital Media, Cultures, and Industries minor. The faculty member will advise Communication Studies majors and DMCI minors, contribute to curriculum assessment and development, participate in departmental, college, and university service, and help grow the department's media studies curriculum, digital media programming, and socially engaged media practice. Faculty typically teach four-unit classes on a two-year 2-2-2-3 rotation, with a contracted workload expectation of 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. Faculty are encouraged to contribute to the LMU Core Curriculum. The department values collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged teaching and research, and seeks a colleague eager to teach and mentor a diverse student body in Los Angeles. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Media Studies, or a closely related field by August 2027. Candidates whose Ph.D. is incomplete must provide evidence of a workable completion timeline before appointment. Applicants must demonstrate an ongoing research agenda and commitment to inclusive, student-centered education and effective work with students from diverse backgrounds. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on media industries or institutions, who have media production skills, and who can support the continued growth of the department's media studies curriculum, digital media programming, and socially engaged media practice. The application deadline is December 1, 2026. Applicants submit a letter of application, current CV, unofficial transcripts, evidence of teaching excellence, and a research sample in a single PDF through the LMU Employment website. The reasonable expected salary is $86,500. The position may not be eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
