About The Position

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at the University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Classics specializing in ancient Greek literature and culture. We seek a candidate whose research focuses on any period from Homer to the Roman era. The area of expertise is open and may include regions of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East outside of core Greek territories. Additional specializations are welcome (e.g., languages other than Greek, linguistics, material culture, Classical reception, women’s studies, theory and methodology, digital humanities, religion, environment, empire, colonialism, migration, global connections). The candidate should demonstrate their commitment to research and provide strong evidence of a robust publication agenda. The candidate will participate in teaching core courses of the Classics undergraduate curriculum as needed, courses on the Greek language and literature at all levels, as well as upper-level courses in their area of expertise. Previously taught courses include “Alexander the Great, Then and Now,” “Greece and Rome in Literature and Film,” “Women: From Antiquity to Modernity,” and “Aristotle: How Stuff Works.” The current courses can be found here; the new course offerings are welcome. Interest in teaching international destination courses and continuing the existing “Study Abroad in Greece” summer program is a high priority. The candidate should be willing to contribute to the development of the program and its curriculum; to mentor students and supervise undergraduate research projects. They should be committed to service, including service to our student community.
