About The Position

The College of Education, Department of Special Education at the University of Hawai'i is seeking an Assistant Professor in Assistive and Instructional Technology (Special Education Technology). This is a tenure-track, full-time, permanent position funded by general funds, contingent upon fund availability. The appointment is set to begin at the start of the Spring 2027 or Fall 2027 semester. The selected candidate will be required to complete the College of Education New Faculty Orientation, Title IX training, and other necessary training within their first year, and must pass a criminal background check.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution; ABD will be considered if completed prior to the hire date.
  • Scholarly research expertise in assistive and instructional technology (special education technology) for students with disabilities.
  • Broad knowledge of special education.
  • At least two (2) years of K-12 teaching experience as a licensed special educator (in the US or internationally).
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and scholarly expertise in Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Scholarly expertise related to special education technology and inclusive practices.
  • Knowledge, experience, or research working with diverse populations of Hawai‘i, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, families, and communities.
  • Experience in teaching, supervising, and/or advising teacher candidates in higher education.
  • Experience teaching diverse university students (e.g., culturally and linguistically diverse, first-generation students, part-time students).
  • Evidence of scholarly activity focused on using artificial intelligence to support teaching and learning in K-12 and/or University settings.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses using on-campus, distance, and hybrid delivery methods.
  • Teach content for teachers seeking licensure in mild/moderate and/or extensive support needs.
  • Supervise field/practicum activities in field-based teacher preparation.
  • Advise and mentor students, including graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.
  • Develop and maintain an active program of research/scholarly activity and publications in the area of specialization.
  • Provide service to the university, public schools, and professional community.
  • Participate in program review, program assessment, and accreditation activities.
  • Engage in efforts that uphold and strengthen the University of Hawai'i’s mission as a Hawaiian place of learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
