About The Position

West Virginia University is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track (9-month) Assistant Professor for the Department of Human Performance, Division of Respiratory Therapy. This role contributes to a well-established program known for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, aligning with the mission of WVU and the School of Medicine. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality instruction in didactic, laboratory, and clinical settings. Responsibilities include managing student coursework, refining laboratory skills, conducting simulation exercises, and training students on AARC Clinical Practice Guidelines for modern patient management strategies. The position requires active support for the Program Director, Clinical Director, and Vice Dean of Health Professions in the School of Medicine, focusing on student outcomes through tutoring, retention strategies, recruitment event participation, and other positive outcome-driven initiatives. Direct student advisement, including training and familiarity with scheduling and advising processes, is also a key component. Active participation in departmental, university, and professional service activities is expected.

Requirements

  • Hold a master’s degree in the field of study of Respiratory Therapy, Education, Health Administration, Business, or a related field.
  • Must have a current valid Respiratory Therapy license for the State of West Virginia or be eligible for a West Virginia Respiratory Therapy licensure.
  • Must hold current valid Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credential.
  • Have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience teaching either as an appointed faculty member in a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program OR as a clinical instructor/ preceptor for students of such programs.
  • Have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two (2) years in clinical respiratory care.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of the appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality instruction in the didactic, laboratory, and clinical arenas.
  • Provide daily management of student’s coursework.
  • Refine laboratory skills.
  • Conduct simulation exercises.
  • Train students with AARC Clinical Practice Guidelines to prepare students in the latest patient management strategies.
  • Assist the Program Director, Clinical Director, and Vice Dean of Health Professions in the School of Medicine to promote optimal student outcomes through tutoring, promoting retention strategies, recruitment event participation, and additional positive outcome related strategies.
  • Provide direct student advisement which requires training and familiarity of the process for student scheduling and advising.
  • Engage in departmental, university, and professional service activities.
