About The Position

The History Department of the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in any field of early modern or modern Chinese history beginning September 1, 2027. Applicants should have an active research agenda, evidence of excellence in teaching, and a Ph.D. in History or a closely related field in hand by August 31, 2027. The History Department has thematic strengths in public history; cultural and social history; science, medicine, and health; imperialism, colonialism, and indigeneity; and labor and food history. Our students take courses in African, Latin American, and Asian history that complement our offerings in United States and European history. UMass Boston and the College of Liberal Arts prioritize student success and interdepartmental collaboration. We seek a colleague whose regional expertise in the history of China since the early modern period will expand and diversify our curriculum and also reinforce college-wide expertise in East Asian studies. Faculty in the History Department teach an effective 2-2 load. The position would include teaching undergraduate surveys in Chinese and East Asian history, as well as upper-level courses in areas of specialization. We hope the incoming sinologist will also contribute to our graduate (MA) program, which has both online and in-person tracks.
