The Department of Earth, Environment, and Society at the University of St. Thomas is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geographic Information Science (GIS), or a related field, starting Fall 2027. The position requires an interdisciplinary environmental scholar who uses geospatial analysis (GIS, remote sensing, spatial modeling, environmental informatics visualization) to understand and address environmental challenges in human and natural systems. The ideal candidate will be committed to the teacher-scholar model, engage in scholarship related to environmental change, sustainability, ecosystem resilience, climate adaptation, environmental justice, water/land systems, urban/regional sustainability, socioecological systems, conservation science, or other environmental issues. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to growing programs in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, and GIS, and help students develop practical and analytical skills for environmental problem-solving. The role also involves interest in Common Good Community-Engaged courses. The professor will teach introductory and advanced GIS and geospatial analysis courses, as well as courses for broader environmental curricula. Potential teaching responsibilities include introductory/advanced GIS, remote sensing, environmental problem-solving, environmental science, environmental studies, sustainability, and upper-level courses in the candidate’s specialization. The standard teaching load is six, four-credit courses per year, with a research reallocation for faculty with active research labs to mentor undergraduate researchers. In addition to teaching and advising, the successful candidate must maintain an active research agenda with undergraduate collaborators and inclusive practices, contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives, participate in departmental and university service, cultivate external partnerships, and support the University’s mission of advancing the common good.
