About The Position

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to assume the duties of Director of Choral Activities. Preferred candidates will have experience conducting a variety of choral ensembles, expertise in recruitment and retention of students, and a strong desire to build community engagement. SIUE is a nationally recognized university that provides students with a high-quality education that powerfully transforms their lives. Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop the bluffs above the Mississippi River and only a short drive from downtown St. Louis, the SIUE campus is home to a diverse student body of more than 12,000. For over 60 years, the SIUE Department of Music has been preparing musicians for fulfilling careers. The faculty consists of distinguished artist-educators committed to their students' success, and alumni work worldwide in all areas of music. The department offers degrees in classical performance, jazz performance, music education, theory/composition, and music business. The music degree programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The Director of Choral Activities will provide artistic and administrative leadership for all areas of the choral program.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree (DMA, DM, or D.Mus.) in choral conducting or in a related field. PhD in music with a strong focus in choral conducting considered.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in recruiting and retaining students from diverse populations within Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
  • Administrative skills or experience

Responsibilities

  • Leading and conducting university choral ensembles, including a smaller, auditioned mixed choir and a larger, non-auditioned mixed ensemble for students and community members.
  • Providing an environment for high expectations and artistry and foster opportunities for diversity and inclusivity.
  • Creating new ensembles of various voicings to encourage diverse cross-campus involvement and collaborating with other current choral ensembles.
  • Teaching courses in undergraduate choral conducting, choral literature, applied conducting, and other duties as assigned.
  • Collaborating with the choral music education area and other departmental ensembles.
  • Facilitating community engagement events, including choral festivals, All-State clinics, summer workshops, and tours.
  • Performing service and scholarship commensurate with rank and interests
