About The Position

The Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Justice Studies at Montclair State University is actively seeking applications for an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice to begin in August 2027. This is a tenure-track appointment with a broad search in any area of criminal justice or criminology. The university is particularly interested in candidates prepared to teach required courses such as research methods, criminology, and/or the department’s interdisciplinary course on theories of justice. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the University's mission through excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The department is the second largest in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, with over five hundred criminal justice majors and a master’s degree in Justice Innovation and Leadership. The department has an interdisciplinary focus including Criminal Justice/Criminology, Law, International Justice, and Social Justice, and serves a large minoritized and first-generation college student population.

Requirements

Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, or a related field.
Record of achievement and potential for future success in research, scholarship or creative activity.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching all students.
A record that demonstrates interest and commitment to service.

Nice To Haves

Significant record of scholarly/creative work.
Experience teaching criminology, criminal justice, or sociology courses at the undergraduate level.
Experience teaching a diverse student body and first generation college students.
Peer-reviewed publications in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field.

Responsibilities

Teach 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) per semester, with potential for reassigned time for additional responsibilities.
Center student success and measurable learning outcomes through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and the integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments.
Conduct classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising.
Develop and update courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.
Engage in productive scholarship or creative activity that expands, enhances, or applies knowledge, sharing research results in national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues.
Contribute valuable service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities, including participating in shared governance and academic program vitality.
