About The Position

The Department of Counseling at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks two Assistant Professors to serve as core faculty in its growing Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program As an Assistant Professor, Counseling you will teach core and clinical mental health counseling specialization courses in the CMHC master’s degree program; advise and mentor counseling students; establish/continue a strong and independent program of research; provide service to the counseling profession at local, state, and/or national levels; and participate collaboratively in program, department, college, and university service and shared governance. You may also provide clinical supervision to practicum and internship students and contribute to the development and delivery of CMHC concentration areas such as addictions counseling, couple and family counseling, and play therapy. Typical duties may include but are not limited to: Teach assigned courses and adequately perform other duties/responsibilities as articulated on the annual assignment in the Counseling Department’s master’s degree programs. Participate in clinical teaching, supervision, and advising. Plans, prepares, and teaches assigned courses, including developing syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments. Delivers consistent, interactive, and engaging lectures aligned with curriculum goals and accreditation standards. Maintains the highest standards of classroom instruction and engages in reflective self-assessment to ensure continuous improvement. Holds regular office hours and provides academic advising and individual support to students. Utilizes the University's learning management system and other instructional technologies effectively. Collaborates with departmental faculty on curriculum development and program advancement. Ensures curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met. Establishes and maintains an active research program, including opportunities for undergraduate student involvement. Establish/continue a strong and independent program of research as described by university and college evaluation documents Demonstrates evidence of scholarly publication and grantsmanship. Engages in continued professional development and maintains professional skills appropriate to rank and field. Actively participates in departmental, college, and university committees and meetings. Contributes to community, institutional, and professional service in support of the University’s mission. Participates in faculty evaluation, student learning assessment, and required training activities. Communicates professionally and in a timely manner with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators. Upholds the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, and excellence in all professional activities. Complies with University policies, procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • An earned doctorate in Counseling or Counselor Education and Supervision from an accredited University. Related doctoral degrees will be considered if the applicant has been employed as full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2026. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at an Instructor level on a fixed contract.
  • Licensure as a Mental Health Counselor in Florida.
  • Current clinical licensure in another state with eligibility to achieve Florida LMHC licensure within one (1) year of hire may be substituted.
  • Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s).
  • Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals.
  • Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high level questioning skills.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional models and strategies.
  • Ability to efficiently use computer applications and web-based tools to complete work tasks
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally
  • Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g. Face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous online).
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction, resulting in improved student learning.
  • Ability to contribute to our recruitment, retention, and support students
  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable.

Nice To Haves

  • An earned doctorate degree from a CACREP-accredited program.
  • At least three (3) years of paid experience as a clinical mental health counselor
  • Clinical supervisory experience and supervisor credential
  • Expertise related to addictions counseling, counseling aging populations, and/or play therapy
  • A record of successful experience teaching/supervising in a graduate counseling program at the university level
  • A record of publication in counseling journals and evidence of strong research potential
  • A record of service to the counseling profession
  • Experience supporting and coordinating field placements"
  • Experience overseeing student training clinic operation and coordinating student schedule, supervisor training, and clinic-based fieldwork activities
