About The Position

The Ohio State University's motto, "education for citizenship," underscores its commitment to fostering an informed, engaged, and civic-minded citizenry, fulfilling its land-grant mission. The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society (the Chase Center), established in 2023, is a multidisciplinary university center dedicated to teaching, research, and public programming focused on the core texts of Western civilization, the principles of the American and Ohio political order, and the foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship. As an independent academic unit, the Center is a leader in the growing field of civic thought. In its second year, the Center is a dynamic academic community with world-class faculty, poised for significant expansion with new academic programs, enhanced course offerings, and deepened outreach through public events, professional development for educators, and study abroad opportunities. Supported by a growing student community and substantial financial backing, the Center is on track for full maturity within three years. The Chase Center is conducting a nationwide search for faculty of all ranks and disciplines. The Center seeks to fill several tenured faculty positions at the rank of Associate and Full Professor, as well as tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, for the 2027–2028 academic year. Successful candidates will be, or demonstrate the potential to be, extraordinary scholars with research and teaching expertise relevant to the Center’s mission. The Center is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to its Bachelor of Arts in Civics, Law & Leadership, and its planned majors in Classical and Liberal Education and Great Books, as well as an honors program. Specific areas of interest include natural law and natural rights, AI and civics, American civic leadership, K-12 classical and liberal education, Western literature, American political theory and development, American constitutional history, and political economy. The Center also seeks distinguished scholars who are leaders in their respective fields. Successful candidates will possess, or show potential for, an outstanding record of research publication, teaching, and contributions to their academic discipline that align with the Center’s mission and are sufficient for tenure in a top disciplinary department. They should also demonstrate a commitment to actively participating in the intellectual life of the Center and Ohio State. The Center's faculty are public-spirited scholars dedicated to fostering an academic community where civic life and intellectual pursuits flourish. Faculty will advance the Center’s mission through significant contributions to their disciplines, teaching and mentoring students, modeling collegiality, and serving the University and the broader Ohio community. All members of the Center are expected to be familiar with and embrace the Center’s mission as defined by ORC § 3335.39. Requirements

Hold, or be on track to complete before starting the position, a Ph.D., J.D., or other terminal degree in a field related to the Center’s mission.
Record or demonstrated promise of publishing high-quality and impactful scholarship in prestigious academic outlets in the faculty member’s discipline, as well as other academic and popular outlets.
Record or demonstrated promise of developing and effectively teaching undergraduate courses that will advance the Center’s mission.

Relevant prior professional experience developing programming consistent with the Center’s mission, including (but not limited to) developing curriculum, activities that promote research productivity, academic community building, and engagement with students and the broader public.
