About The Position

Charles R. Drew University (CDU) is seeking an Assistant Professor & Assistant Director for its Pre-Licensure Program. Reporting to the Pre-Licensure Program Director, this role provides leadership in the daily operations of the College of Nursing and supports the implementation and maintenance of the nursing program through strategic planning, curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and teaching. In the Director's absence, the Assistant Program Director assumes responsibility for academic and curricular issues and supervises assigned faculty and staff. CDU is a mission-driven institution focused on community and located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles, founded to address inadequate medical care and provide equitable medical education opportunities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing required.
  • Active California Registered Nurse license.
  • Master’s degree in nursing and doctorate in a related field required, with coursework in nursing, education, or administration.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in California.
  • Will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Two years teaching experience in pre- or post-licensure nursing programs.
  • One year experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
  • Knowledge of nursing educational program administration.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing, including nursing guidelines set for the board of Registered Nursing.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of teaching and clinical practice in the nursing field.
  • Knowledge of current developments, trends, and complexities within nursing and the healthcare field.
  • Knowledge of health-related education in a global context.
  • Ability to recruit for and market an education program.
  • Ability to develop a strategic plan.
  • Demonstrated commitment to service in underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated leadership in teaching, research, and public service.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to perform and commit to extra-curricular responsibilities for the department, college, and University.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Must have on file in the program and with the Board, an approval form signed by the Board staff approving all teaching functions performed in the program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides operational and academic leadership in conjunction with the Pre-Licensure Program Director.
  • Assumes the duties of the Pre-Licensure Program Director in their absence.
  • Maintains confidential student files and records, upholding FERPA regulations.
  • Responds to student concerns and refers students to appropriate resources.
  • Ensures processes are in place to track, monitor, and record student completion and program progression.
  • Monitors NCLEX progression and develops corrective plans.
  • Provides leadership support to the Office of the Dean.
  • Supervises professional and administrative staff.
  • Promotes intra- and inter-department collaboration.
  • Recommends resources needed for the college.
  • Advises on short and long-range planning for the college.
  • Develops and cultivates community partners.
  • Assists in the implementation of program policies and procedures.
  • Supports daily program operations.
  • Assists in preparing BRN and accreditation documentation.
  • Coordinates clinical placements and site evaluations.
  • Assists in monitoring student progression and program outcomes.
  • Participates in ongoing advisement and monitoring of students, faculty, and program to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Ensures that full-time/part-time faculty files are current regarding RN licensure, CPR, malpractice, and health.
  • Participates in curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Assists with outcome tracking and corrective action planning.
  • Supports faculty orientation and mentoring.
  • Supervises assigned personnel as delegated.
  • Assists in maintaining faculty compliance documentation.
  • Supports recruitment and onboarding efforts.
  • Assists with student advisement and progression monitoring.
  • Participates in student discipline processes as assigned.
  • Oversees the arrangement of clinical placements by clinical coordinators.
  • Conducts visits to new clinical agencies.
  • Assists the Pre-Licensure Program Director with preparation of appropriate Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) forms for site approval visits.
  • Assists the Pre-Licensure Program Director with preparation of appropriate Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) forms for site approval visits.
  • Evaluates clinical placement sites.
  • Provides recommendations regarding resource needs.
  • Assists the Director with data collection for budget preparation.
  • Maintains assigned teaching load.
  • Participates in scholarship (research and scholarly writing) and professional development.
  • Assists with student, staff, and faculty recruitment.
  • Serves on University Committees.
  • Promotes external relations with professional organizations.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as requested.
  • Maintains faculty responsibility.
  • Serves as a member of the Nursing Program and College Committees.
  • Mentors junior-level faculty.
  • Consults with the curriculum committee on curriculum development.
  • Participates in professional development and organizations.
  • Reviews and develops action plans based on student and faculty feedback.
