About The Position

The Department of the History of Art at Yale University is looking to hire a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor with an initial 5-year appointment in African art before 1950. Expertise in the histories of art, performance, architecture and visual cultures of the African continent and its islands, grounded in substantial research and professional engagement in the region, as well as a commitment to teaching introductory courses in African art history, is required. The teaching expectation is normally 4 courses per academic year, plus service to the program, including mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.

Requirements

  • PhD in the History of Art or have completed all requirements for the PhD by June 2027.
  • Strong research focus on the visual arts.
  • Expertise in the histories of art, performance, architecture and visual cultures of the African continent and its islands.
  • Substantial research and professional engagement in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Teach introductory courses in African art history.
  • Teach 4 courses per academic year.
  • Provide service to the program.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
