About The Position

This position assists the Produce Manager in directing and controlling all produce department operations to achieve sales, profit, shrink, labor, and customer service objectives while ensuring adherence to company standards, food safety requirements, and operating procedures. The role involves supporting daily operations, customer service, inventory management, merchandising, shrink control, labor planning, and ensuring compliance with safety and sanitation standards. Additionally, the Assistant Produce Manager will supervise and train department associates, provide input on performance, review department reports, maintain proper receiving and storage, communicate with management and vendors, and act as Manager-on-Duty when assigned.

Requirements

  • Prior produce department or grocery retail experience required
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Knowledge of produce handling, freshness standards, and food safety practices
  • Ability to supervise, train, and motivate associates
  • Basic retail math and report interpretation skills
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving abilities
  • Computer proficiency appropriate to department systems

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing daily produce department operations to meet division and store performance goals.
  • Support total store and department customer service initiatives, ensuring high standards at all times.
  • Assist with ordering, inventory control, product rotation, and maintaining proper in‑stock conditions.
  • Ensure freshness, quality, and appearance standards are consistently met.
  • Execute merchandising plans, displays, signage, pricing, and promotional programs.
  • Monitor and control shrink through proper handling, culling, rotation, and inventory practices.
  • Support labor planning, scheduling, and productivity monitoring to meet budgeted goals.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, safety, and company operating standards.
  • Supervise and direct produce department associates; assign work and adjust priorities as needed.
  • Train, coach, and develop associates; provide ongoing feedback and support.
  • Provide input on associate performance, hiring decisions, and corrective action as appropriate.
  • Review department reports related to sales, shrink, inventory, and labor and take action within established guidelines.
  • Maintain proper receiving, storage, handling, and backroom organization of produce items.
  • Communicate effectively with store management, department leaders, and vendors.
  • Act as Manager‑on‑Duty when assigned and provide leadership coverage as needed.
