About The Position

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Assistant Principal provides leadership and supervision in implementing the educational mission of the school. The Assistant Principal supports academic achievement, staff development, and school improvement in alignment with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, and applicable laws. This role also involves supervising instruction, fostering a safe and supportive school climate, and serving as acting Principal in the Principal’s absence.

Requirements

  • Valid Virginia certification in Administration and Supervision PreK–12
  • Valid Teaching Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License or reliable transportation
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from an accredited institution (Master’s in Administration required)
  • Extensive successful teaching experience
  • Strong knowledge of curriculum, instructional methods, and differentiated instruction.
  • Familiarity with data systems, student performance analysis, and instructional planning.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state education laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency with school technologies, computer systems, and educational software.
  • Effective communication skills with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to equity, professional ethics, and school improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and administration of school programs aligned with district goals.
  • Provides leadership and direction for curricular and extracurricular programs.
  • Supports ongoing evaluation and improvement of educational offerings.
  • Promotes a safe, inclusive, and respectful school environment that encourages academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Encourages parental involvement and maintains effective communication with students, staff, and families.
  • Coordinates the work of school staff and district program leaders to implement instructional best practices.
  • Conducts assessments of student learning and supports instructional adaptations to meet individual needs, including those with special needs.
  • Involves staff in planning and evaluating instructional programs.
  • Supervises and evaluates teaching and support staff as assigned.
  • Encourages and facilitates staff participation in professional development.
  • Supports staff with implementing innovative teaching strategies.
  • Ensures compliance with school discipline policies and attendance requirements.
  • Supports interventions and practices that promote student success.
  • Prepares class schedules, master schedules, and extracurricular activity plans.
  • Assists with budget planning and financial operations within district guidelines.
  • Continues to grow professionally through participation in workshops, seminars, and ongoing study.
  • Models self-reflection and continual improvement in leadership practice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or designated administrators.
  • Supervises students during non-instructional times such as lunch, recess, and events.
  • Coordinates the selection and inventory of instructional materials, textbooks, and supplies.
  • Travels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
