About The Position

The South Portland School Department is seeking a dedicated, collaborative, and student-centered Assistant Principal to support the administrative team at South Portland Middle School in creating a safe, inclusive, and academically engaging learning environment for all students. The Assistant Principal will play an important role in student support, staff collaboration, school operations, and family engagement. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator and leader who builds strong relationships, communicates effectively, and is committed to helping every student succeed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid state teaching certification/licensure.
  • Successful elementary teaching experience.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student achievement and equity.
  • State of Maine Building Administrator 040 certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with restorative practices, MTSS, and PBIS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the administrative team in the daily leadership and operation of the middle school.
  • Promote a positive, safe, respectful, and inclusive school culture.
  • Assist with student behavior, discipline, attendance, and social-emotional needs.
  • Support teachers through classroom observations, feedback, professional learning, and instructional coaching.
  • Help monitor student achievement and use data to identify areas for improvement.
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff to meet the academic and behavioral needs of diverse learners.
  • Assist with school schedules, events, emergency procedures, and other operational responsibilities.
  • Communicate school expectations, policies, and initiatives clearly and consistently.
  • Support special education, intervention, and student support teams as appropriate.
  • Respond to parent and family concerns with professionalism and a solutions-focused approach.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities in the principal's absence as assigned.
