About The Position

The Assistant Principal serves as an instructional and administrative leader of the high school. This role involves working collaboratively with staff, students, and the community to ensure a high-quality educational program and to formulate and accomplish the school's mission. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of modern educational principles and practices, curriculum development, and effective leadership strategies. The Assistant Principal will assist the Principal in various administrative functions, including personnel management, resource management, student attendance, scheduling, and supervision of instructional activities. A strong emphasis is placed on student safety and security, requiring employees to model professional conduct, maintain appropriate boundaries, and promptly report any suspected child abuse or neglect. This role is subject to the Students First Act of 2011.

Requirements

  • Valid Alabama teacher’s certificate.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Administrative certification from an accredited college/university.
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of modern education and ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and trends.
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the law as pertaining to schools.
  • Knowledge of various evaluation tools.
  • Knowledge of state and local policies and procedures.
  • Skills in recruitment, selection, induction, and assignment of personnel.
  • Skills in maintaining effective discipline.
  • Ability to plan and conduct faculty meetings.
  • Ability to evaluate staff effectively.
  • Ability to manage fiscal resources.
  • Physical mobility, dexterity, strength, and visual acuity to meet student needs, deal with student problems, and assist with building maintenance problems and school ground monitoring activities.
  • Valid Alabama teacher’s certificate.

  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Such alternative to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
  • Submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Background checks may not be more than ten (10) years old.
  • A new background check is required for anyone new to Madison City Schools, regardless of the recency of the ABI and FBI background checks.
  • Employees are expected to model professional conduct, maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with students, use district-approved channels for communications, and avoid interactions that could be perceived as favoritism, grooming, or undue familiarity.
  • Staff must promptly report suspected child abuse or neglect to law enforcement authorities as required by Alabama law.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing effective leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the instructional program.
  • Assist in interpreting and enforcing local, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Assist the principal in personnel functions, including recruitment, selection, induction, and assignment of personnel.
  • Assist the principal in securing, maintaining, and managing material resources.
  • Assist in improving student attendance.
  • Assist with scheduling and assigning students for instruction.
  • Assist with extracurricular activities.
  • Assist with the supervision of classroom instruction.
  • Assist with the distribution and accounting of textbooks and instructional supplies.
  • Assist with curriculum development and other related matters.
  • Prepare assigned reports.
  • Assist with inspection of the physical plant and grounds and report maintenance/custodial needs.
  • Assist with procedures related to the health and safety of staff and students.
  • Assume overall responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
  • Be on call when necessary to provide proper building security and building maintenance, and to handle emergency situations.
  • Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
