About The Position

The Assistant Plant Breeder will collaborate closely with the Plant Breeder to support research and development programs, with a strong focus on seed production and program execution. This role contributes to the development and advancement of breeding materials while supporting the management of Seed Production Programs for artichoke, celery, and lettuce ensuring successful advancement from trial stages to commercial production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in crop science, plant genetics, Agronomy, or related field is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in plant breeding, seed production, or agricultural field operations experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of field trial design and seed production practices.
  • Possess strong project management skills.
  • Ability to manage detailed data and maintain accurate records.
  • Administer research results and make recommendations for management level decision-making.
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex problems.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely; both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in field environments across multiple growing regions.

Nice To Haves

  • MS is highly desirable.
  • Understand and converse in Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general computer applications is highly desired.
  • Ability to work with specialized breeding software.

Responsibilities

  • Implement research methods and techniques for improving plant breeding.
  • Assist with field operations including rogueing, bagging and harvest activities.
  • Perform crosses as directed
  • Maintain detailed records throughout the research and development cycle for plant breeding and seed production cycle. including collecting, tracking, and analyzing yield and performance data to identify issues impacting seed quality, yield, or variety performance.
  • Develop and maintain key industry contacts.
  • Work in all aspects of Increase programs: Observation trials, Single row trials, Increase blocks, Accurate yield data, Determine any serious issues, Full production.
  • In cooperation with the Production Group, develop trial planning for all growing regions (Salinas Valley, Huron, Oxnard and assist with Desert Trials Program) of all crops to ensure timely and accurate execution.
  • Accurately map all trials and distribute maps to all members of the Production Group in a timely manner.
  • Monitor all trials throughout growing cycle.
  • Lead small crews to accomplish seed production and trial-related activities.
  • Maintain regular communication with Harvest Commodity Supervisors to exchange feedback on seed performance, variety concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
