About The Position

The NRC is seeking a Plant Assistant to support its Real Property Planning and Management Branch. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an autonomous environment with dynamic priorities and daily challenges. The successful candidate will be open to learning, contribute their ideas, and support staff in electrical, plumbing, A/C refrigeration, and machining/millwright trades. Responsibilities include performing maintenance activities such as troubleshooting, servicing mechanical systems and equipment (pumps, fans, compressors, motors, HVAC), and filter changes. Additional duties involve installing/removing/inspecting fire extinguishers and safety equipment, cleaning parts, door repairs, replacing ceiling tiles, repairing tools, and maintaining facility appearance. The role requires good communication and computer skills for report writing and working with technical documents.

Requirements

  • Secondary School Diploma according to provincial standards.
  • Experience working in an industrial or commercial maintenance environment.
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting equipment which may include hand tools, power tools, fan coil units, air handling units, exhaust fans, building automation system, building equipment and vehicles.
  • Experience working with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) safety equipment and workplace safety procedures.
  • Experience handling hazardous and chemical products.
  • Experience working at heights.
  • Experience operating lifts and other heavy equipment or vehicles (e.g., Scissor or man lifts).
  • Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles, and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects.
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a valid Ontario class G driver’s license.
  • Reliability Status (verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required).
  • English language proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to staff in electrical, plumbing, A/C refrigeration and machining/millwright trades.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance activities including troubleshooting and servicing mechanical systems and equipment such as pumps, fans, compressors, motors, and HVAC equipment.
  • Perform filter changes.
  • Install, remove, and inspect fire extinguishers and safety equipment.
  • Clean parts and equipment.
  • Perform door repairs.
  • Replace ceiling tiles.
  • Repair tools and assorted equipment from the tool crib.
  • Perform routine tasks to maintain and keep NRC facilities well-kept and presentable.
  • Write short reports and work from manuals, drawings, and/or sketches.
