About The Position

In collaboration with the nurse manager, this role supervises staff and unit operations while also providing direct patient care. The Assistant Nurse Manager ensures the delivery of safe and quality patient care by supervising staff and maintaining professional nursing practice standards. They maintain a high visibility on the unit, especially during off-shifts, to resolve problems as needed. This role also involves administrative, human resource, payroll, quality improvement, and unit coordination activities. The position requires serving in a direct patient care role greater than 50% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
  • Two (2) years of RN experience in a related area of nursing.
  • Current RN compact/multistate license recognized by the NCSBN Compact State or licensed to practice as an RN in the state of employment.
  • Ability to serve in a direct patient care role greater than 50% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Management/supervisory experience preferred.
  • Certified in nursing specialty preferred.
  • A nursing diploma or an Associate's Degree in Nursing may be considered if the applicant signs a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to enroll in an accredited BSN or MSN program within one year and obtain a BSN or MSN degree within four years.
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle record (for Critical Care Transport roles).

Responsibilities

  • Oversees patient care activities in a charge nurse capacity to ensure safe and quality patient care.
  • Manages staff allocation and scheduling, patient assignments, and rounds.
  • Investigates and resolves patient care issues.
  • Coordinates admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring appropriate transitions of care.
  • Ensures interdepartmental coordination.
  • Provides direct patient care consistent with the charge nurse/clinical registered nurse job description.
  • Maintains all clinical competencies.
  • Performs patient experience activities such as role modeling, staff mentoring, patient rounds, service recovery, and problem resolution.
  • Assists with continuing staff development, including clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborates with clinical nurse educators to support new staff orientation and training.
  • Maintains records related to staff competencies, certification, and licensure.
  • Serves as a professional role model, coach, and resource for employees.
  • Performs administrative and quality management activities to ensure quality expectations and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ensures unit compliance with departmental, Prisma Health, safety, regulatory, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains records related to regulatory/environmental standards, quality audits, and other unit-specific record-keeping.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in preparing for Joint Commission visits and other regulatory reviews.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager in human resources activities, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, coaching, counseling, staff rounding, and performance management.
  • May assist with payroll processing.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in maintaining the unit budget through appropriate allocation and utilization of resources.
  • Shares accountability with the Nurse Manager for unit, department, and organizational goal achievement.
  • Assists in planning, directing, and evaluating short-term and long-term projects for the unit.
  • Develops, submits, implements, and evaluates performance objectives for self and the unit.
  • Works with health care team members on activities to improve patient care outcomes.
  • Participates in Nursing and/or hospital committees and work groups as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
