About The Position

Colby College, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), seeks an assistant men’s basketball coach for the period of July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. Colby College boasts 32 intercollegiate sports competing at the Division III level, alongside a robust campus recreation program and various club and intramural sports. Over one-third of Colby's 2,200 students participate in intercollegiate sports, and nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation. The College features a state-of-the-art athletics complex, one of the best Division III facilities in the country, including an indoor track and field center, an aquatic center with Maine's first 50-meter pool, a squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, new competition and recreation fields have been opened. Colby College is located in central Maine, offering excellent access to outdoor venues like the Belgrade Lakes and Sugarloaf Mountain Resort.

Requirements

  • Ability to travel for team practices, competition, and scouting in and out of state.
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience.
  • Previous experience coaching and/or competing at the collegiate level is highly desirable.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality with regard to employee data, documents, issues, etc., and respect privacy needs of employees and past employees.
  • Ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
  • Ability to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in situations where individuals express opinions or exhibit strong emotions.
  • Ability to frequently move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions.
  • Ability to mentally track multiple projects and tasks.
  • Ability to work in a moderate noise level environment with potential for unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.
  • Frequent travel and early morning/evening/weekend work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the head coach in all duties involved in running a competitive Division III program.
  • On-site coaching in games and practices, including organization and implementation of daily practices.
  • Prepare film breakdown and analysis, and present analysis to team members.
  • Plan and prepare for games.
  • Provide support and encouragement to student athletes, including academic counseling and advising.
  • Monitor academic progress of athletes.
  • Recruit and retain talented athletes successfully.
  • Research academic and athletic credentials.
  • Build relationships with prospective student athletes and their families through email, phone calls, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Organize and implement recruit visits.
  • Understand NCAA rules, compliance, and laws.
  • Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes.
  • Serve as an effective role model for College age students.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the program.
  • Provide effective communication to the head coach.
  • Collaborate effectively with other Department of Athletics’ team members.
  • Assist with the coordination of team travel.
