Purpose of the Position: Assist Fleet Managers, Superintendents in ensuring the Company Safety, Quality and Environmental policies and procedures are understood and implemented onboard all company vessels. Assist with leading and managing vessel crews to achieve safe and efficient vessel operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in maritime field, Maritime Academy graduate preferred, or five years equivalent experience required
  • Advanced United States Coast Guard license Chief Mate preferred. Seagoing experience required.
  • Knowledge of ABS / NS5 or similar software helpful
  • Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products required, experience with Lotus Notes preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of American Bureau of Shipping, United States Coast Guard and international regulations and protocols relating to company vessels required
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)

Responsibilities

  • Assist Superintendent in monitoring vessel compliance to OSG Safety, Quality and Environmental (SQE) Policy
  • Assist in the Supervising of vessel operations to optimize vessel availability while protecting asset value
  • Contribute to the evaluation of skills of shipboard personnel and make promotional recommendations
  • Participate in incident response, investigation and corrective action where directed
  • Clearly communicate to all shipboard personnel that their safety and the protection of the environment are the company’s primary concern and that the prevention of injuries and illness onboard our vessels should be fundamental to all operational decisions
  • Assist Superintendent with review of the Management System (MS) and make recommendations on changes based on vessel observations, audits and vetting results
  • Assist with the responses to vessel vetting inspections and follow-up with required corrective actions. Assist in tracking and responding to SQE SDRs.
  • Participate in the development and/or revision of MS procedures to achieve effective guidelines, as required
  • Review vessel safety minutes and training records and advise supervisor of any required corrective actions
  • Participate in chartering/customer inquiries to ensure accuracy of contracts and to achieve customer satisfaction
  • Monitor vessel Environmental programs for effectiveness
  • Attends vessel regularly for vessel safety audits and SIRE vetting inspections with internal and external auditors. Assist with the responses to vessel vetting inspections and follow-up with required corrective actions
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Fleet Manager related to vessel operations including navigation, cargo ops, bridge management and safety improvement.
  • Represent OSG in a professional manner to provide efficient and economic service to all customers
