About The Position
Bridge LA is a nonprofit committed to expanding access to youth sports and cultural arts in underserved communities. Its mariachi program brings traditional music education directly to public schools, helping students build cultural pride, discipline, and musical talent. The program aims to preserve and expand the mariachi tradition and make it accessible to students through low-cost instruction. Bridge LA is seeking an assistant instructor to support the lead instructor at an after-school music club. The role focuses on teaching elementary students core mariachi instruments and vocals and preparing them for small-group performances. The schedule is Tuesday through Thursday, from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., in 1–1.5-hour increments, for approximately 3–4 hours per week. School locations include Pacoima, San Fernando, and Granada Hills, California, with Culver City listed as coming soon. Two positions are available.
Requirements
- Strong experience in mariachi performance and instruction.
- Ability to teach young people with little or no prior music experience.
- Experience playing in a mariachi group at school, university, or for hire.
- Reliability, patience, and passion for cultural arts.
- Fingerprinting/LiveScan and a TB test are required for school-site work.
Nice To Haves
- Three years of mariachi playing experience (preferred).
- Bilingual English/Spanish ability.
- Current college student with a mariachi background.
- Educator with a valid or pending teaching credential.
- Experience working with children at a public school.
Responsibilities
- Assist the lead instructor with weekly mariachi classes for students in grades 3–5.
- Teach and guide students in vocals and traditional mariachi instruments, including violin, trumpet, guitarrón, vihuela, and guitar.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Coordinate simple recitals or end-of-session performances.
- Maintain attendance records and communicate with onsite after-school program staff.
- Help promote the program to students to increase participation.
- Assist in organizing music performances at schools and other venues.
