About The Position

This is a Full-time non-union contract position scheduled to work 35 hours per week Monday to Friday, Evening Shift (3:00pm-11:00pm). The role involves training, developing, and supervising shelter support staff, relief staff, and security staff. The Assistant Manager oversees program service delivery, manages day-to-day staff and client issues, liaises with Central Intake, and follows up with facility management. Responsibilities include maintaining work schedules, ensuring proper staffing and shift coverage, updating incident reports and documentation, and supporting the hiring and training of new staff. This role requires close collaboration with other Assistant Managers and the Manager to ensure smooth daily operations and clear inter-team communication. The position also involves coordinating and supporting service delivery to clients, ensuring files and documentation are up-to-date in databases, and supporting/leading shelter staff in managing crises and high-risk situations. The Assistant Manager ensures compliance with operational policies, procedures, and Peel Shelter Standards, and works with the team on developing and updating shelter policies. Availability on call for staff emergencies is also required.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent and related management experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a shelter setting is required, with at least one (1) year of experience in supervising shelter programs and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Toronto Shelter Standards.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing, implementing and evaluating programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in issues facing people experiencing homelessness.
  • Well-developed organizational, analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Internet, Excel and email is essential.
  • Experience in entering and monitoring data in an internet-based database.
  • Possession of a valid First Aid/CPR training certificate is required.
  • Possession of a valid Naloxone training certificate is required.
  • Required to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) Police check. The VSS must have been completed within past 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Trains, develops and supervises shelter support worker, relief staff and security staff.

  • Ensures that the center and its staff are in compliance with operational policies and procedures and Peel Shelter Standards.
  • Works with team on developing and updating shelter policies.
  • Always be available on call for staff emergencies.
