About The Position

The Assistant Manager of Perishables is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of employees within the Perishables department. This role ensures that customer needs are met by maintaining a positive attitude, creating an atmosphere of friendliness and fun, and encouraging employees to provide prompt, courteous, and efficient service. The Assistant Manager is accountable for upholding the Hy-Vee culture, overseeing training, handling employee issues, coordinating disciplinary procedures, and ensuring product quality and quantities meet customer demands and profitability goals. This position also involves overseeing building maintenance, sanitation, cleanliness, and ensuring compliance with store accounting procedures. The Assistant Manager is expected to use and understand all store hardware and software technology, assist in labor scheduling, evaluate employee performance, train and enforce safety procedures, and direct the ordering of merchandise. They will also assist with replenishing shelf product, designing displays, and solving problems affecting job duties and productivity. Secondary duties include determining employee motivational needs, recruiting and interviewing applicants, staying current with market trends, providing continuous education to employees, recommending merchandise allocation, pursuing retail educational opportunities, assisting in all store areas as needed, and working with department heads on various operational aspects. The role also involves selling merchandise, handling cash registers, and performing other related duties.

Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years old.
  • High School or equivalent experience.
  • One year or more of retail experience.
  • Experience performing the duties of an Assistant Manager.
  • Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of variables and limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret instructions.
  • Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to interview to obtain basic information.
  • Ability to guide people to provide basic direction.
  • Ability to follow technical manuals.
  • Increased contact with people.

  • Confers with employees and assists in solving problems affecting job duties, productivity, and established policies and procedures.

  • Determines the motivational needs of employees and provides the appropriate environment.
  • Recruits and interviews job applicants to recommend or determine employment, and may be involved with the coordination of orientations.
  • Stays current with market trends and information (i.e.; competition, new products, equipment, and merchandising techniques).
  • Provides continuous education for existing store employees regarding new and updated company and store policies, procedures, and job duties.
  • Recommends additions, deletions, and shelf allocation of merchandise to be sold in any department.
  • Pursues retail educational opportunities and continuing education whenever possible.
  • Assists in all areas of the store as needed.
  • Works with department heads and other designated personnel regarding schedules, labor issues, product purchasing, and merchandising to meet their specific goals.
  • Sells merchandise to company employees, customers or issues merchandise upon requisition by authorized personnel.
  • Handles cash registers.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.
