About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services, the incumbent supports the mission of the University by assisting the Manager of Custodial Services in providing leadership and practical custodial knowledge to the various shift crews within the Custodial department. The incumbent also supports the Facilities Management team in assisting with duties including data entry, personnel distribution, evaluations, and coordination of essential department functions.

Requirements

  • Principles and practices of effective supervision, motivation, performance evaluation, progressive discipline and grievance procedures.
  • Principles and practices of effective supervision, motivation, performance evaluation, progressive discipline and grievance procedures.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment, chemicals, and operations.
  • Computer office systems and ability to use technology, systems, and software packages.
  • A high school diploma, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in supervision/leadwork oversight of staff.
  • Minimum 5 years of practical custodial experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working at a Higher Education Institution, with working knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience supervising a custodial operation in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working with represented employees under a collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing review and evaluation of staff and operations and provide feedback to enhance processes to meet programmatic goals.
  • Assess safety and training needs and conduct training to ensure employees safely operate vehicles, equipment, tools, supplies and materials.
  • Ability to use a computerized records system to input and document information.
  • Ability to read and understand use of material SDS sheets.
  • Organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks and projects under competing deadlines and maintain flexibility in response to constantly shifting priorities.
  • Ability to manage, communicate, and work alongside individuals or groups from diverse ethnic, cultural, social- economic, and identifying backgrounds.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to prepare correspondence to communicate and collaborate across organizational lines.
  • Plan, assign and schedule work and establish priorities, review work, and provide input to promote teamwork and optimize effectiveness.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
