About The Position

The Assistant Manager of Lift Maintenance assists in the leadership, planning, and execution of all lift maintenance activities to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the resort's aerial ropeways, surface lifts, conveyors, and associated infrastructure. This position provides day-to-day supervision of maintenance personnel, supports regulatory compliance, manages maintenance programs and projects, and serves as acting department leader in the absence of the Lift Maintenance Manager. The Assistant Manager works closely with Lift Operations, Mountain Operations, Risk Management, and resort leadership to support a culture of safety, operational excellence, employee development, and exceptional guest service.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in lift maintenance, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including severe winter environments.
  • Ability to climb lift towers and work at heights.
  • Ability to traverse steep and uneven mountain terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours as operational needs require.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience within a ski resort lift maintenance department.
  • ANSI B77 and tramway operations training.
  • Experience with Doppelmayr, Leitner-Poma, Skytrac, or similar lift systems.
  • Project management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily management and supervision of the Lift Maintenance Department.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop Lift Maintenance Technicians.
  • Support employee recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Promote a positive culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Assume management responsibilities during the absence of the Lift Maintenance Manager.
  • Coordinate and oversee preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance programs.
  • Ensure lifts and transportation systems are maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in planning annual maintenance schedules, inspections, and major repair activities.
  • Monitor lift reliability and operational readiness to minimize downtime.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and resolution of complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control system issues.
  • Ensure compliance with ANSI B77 standards, state tramway regulations, OSHA requirements, and company policies.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices, including Lockout/Tagout procedures.
  • Participate in accident investigations, safety audits, and risk assessments.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and compliance records.
  • Support and coordinate regulatory inspections and third-party audits.
  • Adhere to all Vail Resort safety protocol and polices.
  • Assist in planning and execution of capital improvement projects and lift upgrades.
  • Coordinate contractors, vendors, and manufacturers as necessary.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting and expense management.
  • Maintain maintenance records and CMMS data.
  • Prepare reports related to lift reliability, maintenance activities, and department performance.
  • Participate in strategic planning and long-term asset management initiatives.
  • Work with resort dispatch for tracking of lift related downtime reporting, tracking and improvements.
  • Assist and consult mountain leadership on hiring and any coaching and or disciplinary needs.
  • Assis and consult in the skill based pay program for staff growth and development.
