About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, incumbents in this position assist in the clinical management of patients using accepted nursing practice. This includes the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual and potential health problems through services such as case finding, health counseling, and provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being. Supervision is exercised over professional nurses, aides, and clerical support staff, including practical training and staff development. The role operates independently in a supervisory capacity, responsible for the assigned department's operations. Key responsibilities include completing performance evaluations, addressing disciplinary issues for assigned staff, and performing on-call duties as needed. Duties are performed in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.

Requirements

5 years or more as a practicing registered nurse in a similar setting.
Knowledge of general nursing theory, standards, and practices.
Communicates effectively with members of the health care team, patients, and families, often under stress or in emergency situations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to read, interpret and follow detailed oral, written and illustrated instructions.
Knowledge of a wide variety of medical equipment and instruments.
Exercises informed judgment, acts competently, assumes responsibility and accountability for patient care.
Maintains professional competency through continuing education, licensure, and professional activities.
Demonstrates professional conduct and appearance, and is accountable for actions and outcomes.
Diploma/Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
Licensed to practice professional Nursing in the State of New York.
Bachelors in Nursing required.
Must maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ENPC certifications.

Responsibilities

Delegates and monitors components of nursing regime to be carried out by nursing staff, by assigning patient care to their nursing care team.
Prioritizes care based on patient safety, preference, age-specific needs, and practice standards in consideration of the continuum of care with timely response to identified care needs.
Assists in the coordination, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing regiment for patients within a nursing unit.
Identifies appropriate nursing resources in developing appropriate nursing care plans for specific patients.
Participates in the definition, maintenance, and interpretation of standards of practice.
Provides care based on current principles of nursing research, evidenced-based practice, and performance improvement.
Participates in the coordination and implementation of nursing rounds.
Provides direct patient care to compliment of patients in the assigned area.
Performs charge duties and preceptor duties.
Participates in multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care and quality assurance activities.
Participates in performance improvement activities and data collection; quality improvement and patient safety activities; assists in maintaining compliance with DOH accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards including code of conduct.
Implements and participates in staff development activities with Clinical Educator.
Participates in the supervision and evaluation of professional and non-professional staff performance, including performance evaluations and disciplinary issues.
Assists in the implementation of nursing policies and procedures, and interprets them to staff.
Participates in committees as assigned.
Reviews applications, interviews and participates in hiring process of nursing staff.
Functions as EMS liaison with Director of Nursing.
Undertakes staff/shift assignments as needed by the department.
