About The Position

Laboratory technicians are non-professional personnel with training in areas of the clinical laboratory useful to the overall efficiency and smooth operation of the laboratory. These areas include: phlebotomy, preparation of send out tests, answering the telephone, and assisting in the chemistry, hematology, and microbiology areas of the laboratory. The purpose of the job description is to provide information on how this useful assistance can be given. In order to qualify for this position, one must be able to work independently all the requirements as described for a Laboratory Assistant. This person should be versatile in all aspects of the laboratory as well as a team player to assist in not only performing, but coordinating the duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant in order to relieve the Clinical Laboratory Scientist the responsibilities of the phlebotomy and processing area, which includes the send out and microbiology set-ups. This person must have an extensive computer and LIS capability to manage and troubleshoot any problems in the processing area as well as the billing aspect. This person needs to be able to demonstrate proficiency in assisting and gaining the confidence of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist to perform the designated automated instruments.

Requirements

  • High school education or its equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience as a phlebotomist.
  • Certified for venipuncture and skin puncture CPT.
  • Able to communicate well in English both in writing and verbally.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a clinical laboratory with at least two years of experience as a Laboratory Technician, a lead laboratory assistant, and/or a Lab Assistant Supervisor, or show equivalent experience.
  • At least two years of LIS experience and computer knowledge, or show proficiency.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Some experience with the operation of any automated chemistry, hematology, or microbiology experience.
  • Work well under supervision and in times of stress.
  • BCLS Card (AHA) within 30 days of hire and maintain.

  • An AA or Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately identify patients by verifying name and MR number before collecting specimens or performing tests.
  • Greet patients courteously, introduce self, and address patients by name.
  • Explain procedures to patients before performing them.
  • Thoroughly clean the patient's skin in the venipuncture area.
  • Perform venipuncture/skin puncture accurately with minimal need for re-sticking.
  • Accurately label blood tubes and record the time and initials on the label.
  • Properly dispose of used sharps immediately after use.
  • Maintain the phlebotomy tray in a sanitary and properly supplied condition.
  • Order the correct tests and completely and accurately complete requisitions for reference laboratories.
  • Use ethical judgment and technical skill within department and hospital policies and legal guidelines.
  • Maintain adequate supplies.
  • Communicate concerns and problems accurately to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Seek guidance and direction as necessary for performance of duties.
  • Respond to changes in scheduling due to admissions, STATs, ER, OP, and timed testing.
  • Understand patient needs and respond accordingly.
  • Follow the proper procedure for blood culture collections.
  • Notify nursing staff of any failure to collect a specimen.
  • Reject inappropriate samples for testing and inform nursing of proper resolution steps.
  • Document all communications regarding rejected samples, results called to nurses, or tests being canceled in the LIS.
  • Assist co-workers in the completion of daily tasks or special projects.
  • Answer the telephone according to Medical Center policy, clearly, concisely, and courteously, respecting confidentiality.
  • Transfer telephone calls to proper personnel and relay messages, including the name and company of the caller if necessary.
  • Greet patients courteously and respond with concern and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Respect patient record confidentiality and use discretion when discussing patient matters.
  • Use available work time to complete all required tasks within established time frames or schedules.
  • Complete special projects and assignments accurately, efficiently, and thoroughly.
  • Complete any work left from a previous shift within a reasonable time to avoid delay of patient treatment.
  • Ensure specimens have been located and problems resolved before shift completion.
  • Accommodate and respond to STAT requests.
  • Organize work to accommodate all STATs and routine pick-ups within available time.
  • Check outstanding orders in the LIS to ensure all patients have had blood drawn.
  • Use LIS order entry questions to set up microbiology.
  • Return promptly from errands, coffee breaks, and meals.
  • Use extra time efficiently and productively on other required duties or assist in other departments.
  • Observe hospital dress code and wear hospital identification badge at all times.
  • Maintain a neat, professional appearance at all times.
  • Understand hospital fire and safety procedures.
  • Attend required in-service/orientation education programs and/or hospital meetings.
  • Observe hospital and department standard operating procedures for precautions for transmission of HIV and HBV and handling of hazardous substances.
  • Observe hospital policies.
  • Maintain work area in an organized, clean, and safe manner.
  • Wear required protective clothing.
  • Wear gloves when handling specimens.
  • Properly dispose of sharps and glass.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
