About The Position

Fulfills curricular and advising needs in Fundamentals: Issues and Texts, an undergraduate major that currently serves approximately 70 students in the College. Students in Fundamentals structure their education around an open-ended question of their own design. Students’ approaches are informed by coursework that focuses on single texts (or a set of tightly-grouped texts) taught by faculty in a range of disciplines including—but not limited to—philosophy, literature, political theory, religion, and history.

Requirements

  • PhD in Comparative literature, English literature, philosophy, religion, or a related humanities field.
  • Experience in undergraduate advising.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty and administrators in a number of disciplinary, geographic and chronological frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches a range of courses that count towards students’ major requirements, including writing seminars and topics courses.
  • Advises students about relevant course offerings across a number of divisions and departments at the University of Chicago.
  • Guides students through the milestones in the program.
  • Participates, in conjunction with faculty, in the assessment of students’ written work.
  • Writes letters of recommendation for students.
  • Assists with the organization of program events, including guest lectures, outings, and special seminars.
