About The Position

The Office of Inspector General is the independent oversight body for Chicago’s approximately 500 public, contract, and charter schools. The Office of Inspector General is charged with the responsibility of investigating allegations of waste, fraud, and financial mismanagement in public education within the jurisdiction of the Chicago Board of Education. The Office's Sexual Allegations Unit (SAU) investigates allegations of sexual misconduct by a CPS-affiliated adult, including employees, contractors, vendors, and charter schools, where the victim is a CPS student and/or a minor. Reporting to the Deputy Inspector General, the Assistant Inspector General, General Investigations Unit will provide legal counsel and support to the OIG regarding investigations involving allegations of criminal activity, official misconduct, ethics and other policy violations, as well as waste and inefficiency by Board of Education employees, contractors and others seeking to do business with the Board of Education. This is a full-time exempt position that will be paid for time worked based on a salary basis.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
  • Admission to the Bar required
  • Minimum of five (5) years of work experience, including a minimum of three (3) of related post-bar experience (e.g., investigations, legal practice, clerkships, etc.)
  • Ability to write and edit accurate, concise, logical and analytical reports to convey complex issues, free from spelling and grammatical errors
  • Refined judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information and facilitate resolution of challenges, including the ability to handle issues of complex and extreme sensitivity
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines and work independently while maintaining high levels of organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse constituents
  • Conflict resolution, problem solving, interviewing, and investigation skills

Nice To Haves

  • Illinois Bar Admission, preferred
  • Professional writing experience such as serving as a judicial law clerk or experience with other demanding legal writing or other rigorous writing with an emphasis on clarity and polish, highly preferred
  • Experience closely editing the written work of others, preferred
  • Experience in the areas of government oversight, criminal/administrative prosecutions, internal investigations, civil rights, contract/procurement, ethics or labor/employment law, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit investigative summary reports, which are sent to the Chicago Board of Education
  • Help guide and direct investigations, including working closely with investigators and assisting with fact-gathering and analysis, including preparing subpoenas and document requests
  • Coordinate with law enforcement agencies on joint investigations
  • Provide legal counsel, support, and guidance on topics including but not limited to, the OIG’s jurisdiction, search and seizure and other constitutional issues, labor and employment, and the interpretation and enforcement of statutes and ordinances
  • Provide guidance, coaching, training, and support to staff attorneys
  • Other duties as assigned
