About The Position

The Assistant Horticulturist will support the Horticulturist in various tasks related to garden and landscape maintenance. This role involves designing and maintaining flower beds, cultivating and caring for shrubs and flowers, trimming and pruning hedges, ensuring plant health, and maintaining low-pressure irrigation systems. The position also includes applying pesticides and fertilizers, maintaining gardening tools and equipment, and operating light vehicles for hauling materials and removing debris. This role requires learning about maintenance, cleaning, and safe operation of equipment.

Requirements

  • Ability to use hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate trucks and light motorized equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • This position is physical in nature and requires the incumbent to bend, carry, squat, stand, twist and lift up to 50+ pounds and push/pull up to 50+ pounds throughout shift and according to specific tasks.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all appropriate licenses / certifications per Federal, State, and Gaming regulations.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • These skills and abilities are typically acquired through the completion of a high school education, experience in landscaping and general grounds maintenance, and/or through two months’ on-the-job training.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of landscaping design, irrigation systems and use of pesticides and fertilizers preferred.
  • Minimum of six months’ experience in landscaping or mechanics preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Horticulturist with designing and cleaning flower beds.
  • Cultivating and caring for shrubs and flowers.
  • Trimming and pruning hedges and shrubbery.
  • Maintaining the health of plants and the appearance of displays.
  • Maintaining low-pressure irrigation systems for landscaping.
  • Applying pesticides and fertilizers to ornamental plantings as needed.
  • Maintaining and repairing gardening hand tools, equipment, and structures.
  • Operating trucks and other light equipment in hauling materials and removing debris.
  • Learning regarding maintenance and the proper cleaning and safe operation of equipment.
