About The Position

Under the supervision of the Head Coach, the Assistant Head Coach is primarily responsible for the age group program and summer swim team for JCC of Greater Baltimore, team administration responsibilities (including team communication, meet assignments / meet set-up,) and maintaining the highest standards of safety with regards to all programming, facilities, and equipment.

Requirements

  • Current USA Foundation of Swim Coach level 1 (or higher) required
  • Have (or be willing and able to obtain) current certifications in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, Concussion Protocol Training, Athlete Protection Training.
  • Additional training and certification through USA Swimming will be necessary.
  • Strong understanding of the sport of swimming and the rules and regulations; A sound understanding of stroke mechanics and training.
  • Strong interpersonal leadership, motivation, and teaching skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and market training and educational programs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Team Unify, Meet Manager and other programs as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor preferred
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding preferred
  • Three to five years age group coaching preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop, promote and administer the JCC Barracuda Swim Team (year-round and summer league)
  • Conduct team tryouts and advise on correct placement.
  • Attend all scheduled in person practices age group, some seniors and master practices as well as dryland activities
  • Attend team-related meetings, meets or department meetings / trainings as scheduled
  • Assist in development of new swim team programming (bonding and fundraising)
  • Look out and prevent bullying of any kind and report any incidents
  • Assist Junior and Senior swimmers in the College Athletics process by acting as a liaison between the swimmer and College Coaches.
  • Manage the logistics and swim meet preparation pertaining to those meets in which the team is participating
  • Ensure entries are properly completed and entered into the appropriate system in timely manner
  • Ensure set-up and functionality of timing systems
  • Attend team swim meets to support entire program (if possible), or ensure at least 2 staff are present at all swim meets(2/3per month)
  • Establish and maintain high safety standards in the pool area
  • Knowledge of the Emergency Action Plan for facility; in event of an emergency elsewhere within the agency, react in accordance with published emergency procedures
  • Ensure the safe and correct use of venue facilities and equipment
  • Maintain swim team and event equipment
  • Check equipment before each session and inform Head Coach of any damaged equipment
  • Plan and deliver fun, quality practice sessions appropriate to the ability of the children
  • Prepare structure for practice for each group
  • Get to know the children in all groups
  • Care for and encourage children in all groups, integrating unhappy children
  • Combine teaching and fun with a variety of activities including exercises, games and social activities
  • Ensure all coaches are assisting effectively
  • Help train assistant coaches and assist them.
  • Work with staff to support the development of their coaching / instructional skills
  • Be involved in other group coaching sessions (practices, drylands and meets) when possible
  • Provide back-up coverage when other coaches are unable to attend a session
  • Participate in departmental and agency training, staff meetings, supervisory conferences, committees and special events as assigned
  • Other duties assigned by the Head Coach
