About The Position

Claiborne Hauling is seeking an experienced grading hand ready to take on a leadership role. The Assistant Grading Superintendent will work closely with the Grading Superintendent, serving as their backup and taking the lead on job sites when necessary. This role involves managing crews, ensuring work quality, maintaining permits and licenses, assisting with bids, and tracking project progress and billing. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of dirt work and the ability to train others.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of grading, excavating, or site work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience leading or running a crew as a foreman, lead operator, or similar role.
  • Strong working knowledge of earthwork methods, compaction, drainage, and site preparation.
  • Ability to read grading plans, site plans, and survey stakes.
  • Ability to operate or competently evaluate dozers, excavators, loaders, and rollers.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Comfort with basic computer tasks including email, Excel, and digital logs/photos.

Nice To Haves

  • TDEC Level I Fundamentals of Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) certification, or the ability to obtain it within 90 days.
  • OSHA 30 and competent person training for trenching and excavation.
  • Experience with GPS machine control (Trimble, Topcon, Leica) or grade-checking rovers.
  • Experience with estimating or takeoff software (AGTEK, Trimble Business Center, Bluebeam, PlanSwift).
  • Experience with construction billing, pay applications, or draw tracking.
  • Commercial or TDOT project experience.
  • CDL Class A or B.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as backup to the Grading Superintendent and independently manage jobs when the Superintendent is off-site.
  • Lead operators, laborers, and truck drivers by assigning daily tasks, setting priorities, and ensuring crew productivity.
  • Teach and enforce correct methods for cut and fill, compaction, subgrade preparation, trenching, pad and footer work, and erosion control.
  • Verify grade and quality using stakes, lasers, GPS machine control, and plans, and correct any deviations promptly.
  • Coordinate equipment and truck needs with dispatch to ensure timely availability on job sites.
  • Enforce safety protocols, including toolbox talks, PPE usage, trench and excavation safety, and traffic control.
  • Liaise with general contractors, inspectors, engineers, and utility locators.
  • Assist in evaluating crew performance and developing the skills of newer operators and laborers.
  • Maintain a calendar for permits, licenses, certifications, and their renewal deadlines.
  • Prepare and submit grading, land disturbance, and stormwater permits (TDEC NPDES Construction General Permit, NOIs/NOTs, and city/county permits).
  • Ensure SWPPP inspections, BMP maintenance, and records are kept up-to-date.
  • Support the renewal of contractor license classifications, business licenses, and agency prequalifications.
  • Track insurance certificates, bonds, and compliance documents for each job.
  • Review plans and specifications, and walk job sites before bids to identify risks and conditions.
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs (cut and fill, haul, aggregate tonnage), productivity assumptions for crews and equipment, and pricing.
  • Organize bid documents and addenda, ensuring timely and complete submissions.
  • Maintain a bid log with results and win/loss history.
  • Track job progress, quantities, truck counts, load tickets, equipment hours, and materials against the job budget.
  • Compile billing packets with supporting documentation for materials, labor, and equipment to facilitate accurate and timely billing.
  • Track project draws and percentage of completion by line item, and prepare supporting quantities for pay applications.
  • Identify tax-exempt materials installed on fixed-bid contracts for correct tax accrual by accounting.
  • Keep daily logs, photos, weather delays, and change-order documentation.
  • Report variances in schedule, budget, and billing, and coordinate with accounting to align job costing, billing, and draws.
